From the Bowl to the Blood: How a Whole Food Diet Measurably Reduces Inflammation in Your Dog

What Is Inflammation — and Why Should Dog Owners Care?
Inflammation is the immune system’s front-line response to injury, infection, or irritation. Short term, it’s essential — it’s how the body heals. Long term, however, chronic low-grade inflammation is the silent driver behind a remarkable range of canine health problems: itchy, flaky skin; recurring ear infections; digestive troubles; joint stiffness; lethargy; and, over time, accelerated cellular ageing.
The problem is that chronic, systemic inflammation in dogs is almost invisible. There’s no fever, no obvious wound, nothing you can point to. What the Science Actually Shows
A landmark 2022 randomised, open-labelled, cross-over clinical trial published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science put this directly to the test with real dogs. Sixteen healthy client-owned dogs were fed either a whole food diet or an extruded dry (kibble) diet for 67 days, then switched to the alternate diet for a further 67 days. Blood samples were taken at the end of each phase and analysed for immune and inflammatory markers.
The results were clear. Dogs on the whole food diet showed significantly lower TNF-α-to-IL-10 ratios compared to their kibble-fed periods. In plain English: the ratio of pro-inflammatory to anti-inflammatory signalling molecules in the blood shifted meaningfully in favour of less inflammation whenever dogs were eating whole food.
TNF-α (tumour necrosis factor-alpha) is a primary driver of systemic inflammation. IL-10 is the immune system’s natural anti-inflammatory brake. A lower TNF-α:IL-10 ratio means the immune system is spending less energy in a state of background alarm — and more energy doing what it should: repairing, protecting, and maintaining your dog’s body.
The same study also found elevated production of IL-8 in whole-food-fed dogs when their white blood cells were challenged with bacterial compounds — suggesting an improved innate immune response. The innate immune system is the body’s first line of defence against pathogens, and these findings suggest whole food strengthens it.
Why Extruded Kibble May Keep the Immune System on Constant Guard
Dry dog food is manufactured through a process called extrusion: raw ingredients are cooked under extreme heat and pressure to produce shelf-stable pellets. This is practical, but it transforms the food in ways that matter biologically.
Extreme heat creates compounds called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs), denatures proteins, and destroys heat-sensitive enzymes and micronutrients that whole food naturally contains. Commercial dry food also requires binders, starches, and preservatives that aren’t present in minimally processed food. The dog’s immune system didn’t evolve to process these compounds — and a growing body of research suggests it responds accordingly, with a persistent low-grade inflammatory state that sits beneath the surface.

Less systemic inflammation means fewer inflammatory flare-ups affecting skin, ears, and digestion; lower background immune activity, freeing up energy for genuine threats; and potential long-term benefits for joint health, organ function, and overall longevity. It’s worth being honest about what the science does and doesn’t say. The 2022 trial measured specific immune markers — it wasn’t a long-term disease outcome study. But the direction of the findings is consistent with what a growing body of research on diet and inflammation tells us: whole food, eaten close to its natural state, supports a calmer, more balanced immune response than ultra-processed alternatives.
