Raw-Fed Dogs Are Significantly Less Likely to Be Obese — Here’s Why It Matters

Posted on June 8th, 2026

If you’ve ever worried that your dog might be carrying a few too many pounds, you’re not alone. Dog obesity is rising across the UK and Ireland — and it’s not a trivial problem. Excess weight puts strain on joints, stresses the heart, shortens life expectancy, and robs your dog of the vitality they deserve.

But here’s the good news: what you feed them makes a real, measurable difference. And now, science is catching up with what raw feeders have believed for years.

What the Research Found

A 2026 peer-reviewed study published in BMC Veterinary Research — one of the most rigorous raw-feeding trials to date — set out to compare the body condition and health markers of 104 healthy dogs. Fifty-one had been fed a raw meat-based diet (RMBD) for at least 12 months. Fifty-three were fed a conventional commercial complete diet (i.e. standard dry kibble or wet food).

The result? Raw-fed dogs had significantly lower rates of obesity and better body condition scores across the board. Dogs eating raw were leaner, more muscular, and carrying less unnecessary weight than their kibble-fed counterparts — even when age and breed were accounted for.

This isn’t a blogger’s opinion or an anecdote from a raw-feeding Facebook group. This is a controlled clinical study, published in a respected veterinary journal, with real dogs, real measurements, and real results.

Why Does This Happen?

The difference likely comes down to what’s actually in the food. Standard commercial dog foods — even premium ones — are built around ultra-processed ingredients: rendered meat meals, cereal grains, and starches that act as cheap fillers and binding agents. These ingredients are calorically dense in ways that don’t match a dog’s natural metabolic needs, and they don’t keep a dog feeling satisfied the way whole protein does.

Raw food, by contrast, is rich in bioavailable protein and natural fat — the macronutrients dogs evolved to thrive on. It contains no hidden starches, no added sugars, and no processed fillers that push caloric intake beyond what a dog actually needs. The body uses what it gets. There’s nothing left over to store.

At Wolfie, every recipe starts with whole, seasonal ingredients sourced from Baronscourt Estate — Wild Pheasant, Wild Venison, Wild Mixed Game. No shortcuts. No padding. Just food that works the way nature intended.

What This Means for Your Dog

If your dog is overweight, or if you’re simply trying to keep them in peak condition as they age, diet is your most powerful lever. Exercise matters, of course. But you can’t out-run a poor diet — and that applies to dogs just as much as it applies to us.

A lean dog is a healthier dog. They move more freely, put less stress on their joints (critical for larger breeds like our Labradors, Maggie and Iris), and are less likely to develop metabolic conditions as they age.

The question worth asking isn’t whether you can afford to feed your dog well. It’s whether you can afford not to.

A Note on Balance

The same study did flag that raw-fed dogs can occasionally fall short on certain micronutrients — particularly iodine, zinc, and vitamin E — if a raw diet isn’t properly formulated. This is exactly why choosing a complete, thoughtfully formulated raw food matters, rather than assembling random cuts of meat at home.

Wolfie recipes are crafted to deliver the precise nutritional balance your dog needs — nothing excessive, nothing missing. Wildly nourishing, in every sense.
