Dental Disease in Dogs: More Serious Than It Looks
Periodontal disease — the term for infection and inflammation of the structures supporting the teeth — affects the vast majority of adult dogs. Estimates from multiple studies suggest that by the age of three, up to 80% of dogs show some signs of dental disease. It is, quite simply, an epidemic hiding in plain sight behind a cheerful, tail-wagging exterior.
But the consequences do not stay in the mouth. Research published in The Veterinary Journal (2019) established a significant relationship between periodontal disease and systemic illness in dogs. The study found that dogs with advanced periodontal disease were 6.3 times more likely to develop endocarditis — a serious infection of the heart valves — and 2.3 times more likely to develop chronic kidney disease. The bacteria responsible for gum infection can enter the bloodstream and travel to distant organs, where the cumulative damage accumulates over years.
In other words, what begins as a build-up of tartar on the back molars can, over time, become a risk factor for heart and kidney problems. Dental health is not a cosmetic concern. It is a foundational element of your dog’s long-term wellbeing.
Why Starch-Heavy Diets Create the Wrong Oral Environment
To understand why diet matters so much for dental health, it helps to understand what happens in your dog’s mouth after they eat.
Dogs do not produce the enzyme amylase in their saliva — the enzyme that begins carbohydrate digestion in humans. When a dog eats a kibble-based diet, which typically contains between 30% and 60% carbohydrates, those starches and sugars are not pre-digested in the mouth. Instead, they coat the teeth and gum line, providing an immediate and abundant food source for the bacteria that cause plaque and tartar.
Research published in PMC (2022) examining the oral microbiota of dogs on different diets found measurable differences in bacterial populations between dogs on wet versus dry food, pointing to the role that food composition plays in shaping the microbial environment of the mouth. Further research has noted that dietary carbohydrate — particularly the quantity consumed — has a negative effect on periodontal disease progression.
A raw diet, by contrast, is fundamentally low in fermentable carbohydrates. Without a steady supply of starch to feed harmful oral bacteria, the conditions that drive plaque accumulation are significantly reduced.
The Mechanical Power of Raw Bones and Meat
Beyond diet composition, raw feeding provides something that no amount of dry kibble can replicate: genuine mechanical cleaning. Chewing raw meat, sinew, and bone creates a natural scrubbing action against the tooth surface — working in the gaps and along the gum line in a way that mimics what nature intended.
The scientific evidence here is compelling. A study by Marx et al. (2016), published in the Australian Veterinary Journal, found that raw beef bones were a highly effective method of removing established dental calculus in dogs. Beagles given spongy raw bones showed a 56.5% reduction in calculus coverage after just three days, rising to 81.6% after 12 days and 87.8% after 20 days. Even cortical (harder) bones produced a 35.5% reduction after three days and a 70.6% reduction after 12 days.
These are substantial numbers — achieved not through a veterinary procedure, but through the simple act of doing what dogs are biologically built to do: chewing.
The study also noted that no complications such as tooth fractures, pieces of bone stuck between teeth, or digestive obstructions were observed across the trial period — an important reassurance for dog owners who are cautious about introducing raw bones.
A Healthier Mouth from the Ground Up
The combination of low fermentable carbohydrates and natural mechanical cleaning makes raw feeding a genuinely different proposition for dental health — not as a replacement for veterinary dental care, but as a foundation that makes good oral health far more achievable.
Dog owners who make the switch to raw frequently report noticeably fresher breath within weeks — a direct result of a healthier bacterial balance in the mouth. They notice cleaner teeth, healthier-looking gums, and reduced tartar build-up. What were once visible brown deposits on the molars gradually reduce and, in many cases, largely disappear.
These are not just cosmetic improvements. They are signs of a mouth in better balance — and, by extension, a body under less chronic inflammatory stress.
A 2022 epidemiological study from the Royal Veterinary College, published in PMC, reinforced that periodontal disease remains alarmingly common in UK dogs seen in primary-care veterinary practice. The study is a reminder that this is not a solved problem — and that proactive choices around diet can make a meaningful difference to the outcomes.
What This Means for Your Dog
