Raw Feeding and the Canine Gut Microbiome Status

If you’ve ever switched your dog onto a raw diet and noticed the difference — the shinier coat, the smaller, less pungent stools, the extra spark at walk time — you’ve probably wondered: is this just in my head, or is something real happening?

It’s not in your head. And increasingly, science is beginning to explain why. In recent years, researchers in veterinary nutrition have turned serious attention to the canine gut microbiome — the vast, living community of bacteria, fungi, and microorganisms that live in your dog’s digestive tract. What they’re finding is compelling. The food your dog eats doesn’t just fuel their body; it actively shapes the bacterial landscape inside them, influencing everything from digestion and immunity to inflammation and long-term health. This article explores what the research actually shows about raw feeding and the canine gut — in plain English, without the jargon.

 THE GUT MICROBIOME: YOUR DOG’S HIDDEN HEALTH ENGINE

Your dog’s gastrointestinal tract is home to trillions of microorganisms — bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microscopic life forms that collectively form the gut microbiome. Far from being passengers, these organisms are active participants in your dog’s health. They help break down food, synthesise vitamins, regulate the immune system, and maintain the integrity of the gut lining. A diverse, well-balanced microbiome is widely associated with better health outcomes in both humans and animals. When that balance is disrupted — a state known as dysbiosis — it can contribute to digestive problems, increased susceptibility to illness, and chronic inflammation. What determines the make-up of your dog’s microbiome? Several factors play a role, including genetics, age, and environment. But diet is one of the most powerful levers available — and that’s where raw feeding enters the picture.

 WHAT RAW FEEDING DOES TO THE GUT MICROBIOME

A landmark 2024 study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science examined the fecal microbiota composition, serum metabolomics, and markers of inflammation in dogs fed a raw meat-based diet compared to those on a kibble diet. The findings were striking. Dogs on raw meat-based diets showed measurably different bacterial communities compared to kibble-fed dogs. Notably, the raw-fed group showed increased levels of intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) — an enzyme associated with gut luminal detoxification and reduced intestinal permeability. The researchers suggested this could reflect a gut environment that is better protected against inflammatory conditions. This built on earlier work. A 2018 study published in PLOS ONE by Deusch and colleagues compared the fecal microbiome and metabolome of dogs fed Bones and Raw Food (BARF) diets with dogs on commercial diets. They found that the microbial communities and metabolic by-products differed significantly between the two groups, with raw-fed dogs hosting higher proportions of bacteria involved in protein and fat utilisation. A 2017 study in BMC Veterinary Research (Sandri et al.) confirmed these patterns, finding that raw meat-based diets altered the faecal microbiome and the end products of fermentation in healthy dogs — suggesting that the type of food reaching the gut shapes not just which bacteria live there, but what those bacteria actually produce.

 BETTER DIGESTIBILITY: GETTING MORE FROM EVERY BITE

One of the most consistently reported advantages of raw feeding is superior digestibility — meaning your dog’s body is able to extract and absorb more nutrients from each meal. The digestibility coefficient of raw meats sits typically in the range of 90–95%, compared to 80–85% for many processed dry foods. In practical terms, this means less waste and more nutrition delivered to your dog’s body per gram of food consumed. It also helps explain why raw-fed dogs often produce noticeably smaller, firmer stools — their bodies are simply using more of what they eat. Higher-quality protein bioavailability is part of this equation too. Proteins can denature during the high-heat processing that creates kibble, which can reduce their biological value. Raw proteins, by contrast, are delivered in a form that is closer to what a dog’s digestive system evolved to process.

INFLAMMATION, GUT INTEGRITY, AND THE LONG VIEW

Gut health doesn’t exist in isolation — it feeds directly into systemic health. A gut that is inflamed or permeable (sometimes called “leaky gut”) allows bacteria and toxins to enter the bloodstream, triggering immune responses throughout the body. Over time, this can contribute to skin conditions, joint problems, and chronic illness. The 2024 Frontiers in Veterinary Science study pointed to elevated intestinal alkaline phosphatase in raw-fed dogs as a potential indicator of improved gut luminal detoxification — essentially, a gut environment that may be more resilient and less prone to inflammatory cascade. A 2021 clinical study published in PMC (Tanprasertsuk et al.) examining health markers in dogs fed raw meat-based versus extruded kibble diets found measurable differences in a range of clinical indicators, adding to a growing body of evidence that diet has tangible, measurable effects on canine health at a biological level. It is worth noting that this is an evolving area of research. Most studies to date are relatively small-scale, and scientists continue to investigate the long-term implications of different dietary approaches. But the direction of travel is clear: the food your dog eats profoundly shapes what happens inside them.

WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE

The science of canine gut health is still developing, but the evidence already available tells a consistent story.
